How To React When Parents Ask About Your Love Life

When was the last time you poured your heart out to your parents? Probably never. A person’s worst nightmare is talking about taboo topics such as alcohol, drugs and relationships with them.

So have they asked that dreaded question yet? That one question that can cause you to turn as red as a friendly cougar’s cheeks or can make you hide in your closet hyperventilating. If they have and you were unprepared, I can imagine how great it went. The rest of you innocent peeps who have not faced this yet, this one’s for you.

Things to do when your parents ask if you have a boyfriend/girlfriend:

1. Give them a blank face as if you have no idea what they mean:

“What? Anyway what was I saying? Yeah, did you know dolphins sleep with one eye open?”
This will probably make your parents deviate the conversation to something else or make them suspect you even more.

2. Roll away to the safety of your room laughing your butt off OR Freak out, hyperventilate and wish for the earth to engulf you right there:

Insanity is the medicine for awkwardness or is it? This one needs some guts to do but it would get them off your back at the cost of questioning your sanity.

3. Tell them the truth whether you are dating someone or not:

“Yeah, Chinti Aunty ka beta Rohit.”
You’ve got to have really cool parents for this and a level of maturity that surpasses us normal lowly people.

4. Brag about dating a celeb:

“She is so beautiful, have you seen her in that bridal dress? You are totally going to love her. Here I have a photo!” Then you can show them a picture of Katrina Kaif.

5. Act like you are the most innocent ever born and preach about your priorities:

“I can’t believe you would doubt your own child. I know what I want in life right now. And I am not going to let this stupidity in way.”
Get a stick up yours and talk about how you would rather study and how you’re too busy for such things.

6. Transfer the focus on your siblings, successfully running away from the spotlight:

“So what? Didi ka bhi to hai.”
This is the worst you could do; it would enrage your parents, your sibling(s). If you still live with your family, risk is even higher.

7. Burst out in tears because you just got dumped:

Condolences to those who have to face this question during such a time, how unintentionally cruel of your parents? That breakdown is excusable.

8. Wallow in self misery as you still haven’t dated anyone:

“You too? Why does everyone keeps asking that? Can’t I be single and happy?”
It is like kicking an abandoned puppy; perhaps your parents will take pity on you and never approach the topic again.

9. Tell them that you are playing the field:

“Arey Zindagi ke maje le rahe hai!”
As double standard our parents can be at times, if you are a guy, they would probably laugh it off, but if you are a girl...

10. Come out of the closet:

“There is this friend of mine; she has this really cute boyfriend so I helped her pick out this light blue stunning one piece for her date. They are so cute together!”
The controversial one, pack your bags beforehand.
